why when a christian says something that offends a non-christian, does the non-christian sometimes say, "interesting what the church teaches," or something to that effect. if a history major says "i like stomping on baby squirrels," i don't say "man, it's interesting what you learn in history class." being a student of christ doesn't make you christ.

Becky, that's an interesting thought. Maybe it's because most avowed atheists in this country started out with some relationship to the church, then got burned or just left, and now blames everything on the church. Many times some religious nuts among us have pushed them away. Other times they just leave on their own. But remember, God desires the fruit of the Spirit, not religious nuts.

On this topic: if a non-christian assumes that whatever I say is something that they teach at my church, let alone all churches, how judgmental does that make them? I have different beliefs from just about everyone at my church, and our church is a lot different from the other churches in the area, including the church of Christ down the street. I think it calls us to help people understand that they can have their own faith, with the help from the church and from individuals, but should remember that no one is perfect. Not many Christians I know claim to be perfect.
I've been thinking something similar lately. the people who accuse christians of being close minded, quick to judge and unengaged in today's world cannot seem to get off their collective asses and see that not all christians are the same. sometimes it's just disappointing, other times it just ticks me off and makes me wonder if we could classify stupidity as an epidemic.

Generally religion tends to teach about every aspect of your life.
History lessons on the other hand do not teach you how to bring up your children for example, or what is good and bad. You can be an active contract killer and still learn history without that being a problem. Historians can be Christians or Muslims, or atheists. Christians can be only Christians (or only Orthodox or Catholic, or etc.) Most churches think that you should be Christian in every aspect of your life. You don't have to be an accountant in every aspect of your life, do you.
In addition to this most people are used to see the church as a mentor or something and they expect the same from religious people. Of course people have free will and to attach someone's behavior to one's religion or the other way around is just common social prejudice. This is what happens when people do not try to understand each other or when they just don't want to think about something too much. This is what prejudices are - they help people not to waste mental energy in thinking. Of course you should be very careful and be thinking-efficient only when it doesn't hurt others.
